Interview results and transcript

Here are some of the main findings related to our field study.

Museum: Fotografiska (website)
Target group: Parents & children aged 5-12

Bored young boy waiting for his mother to watch all pictures
  • While parents mostly use smartphones, children tend more to have tablets.
  • Children have troubles focusing for a long time, and having an exclusively visual experience is difficult.
  • Some children want to touch the pictures.
  • The overall number of children visiting the museum was very low

Transcript:

Hi, I am Alex, from KTH Royal Institute of Technology. What we are going to do as a group is to design an application that would improve the experience for children at the museum (Fotografiska). This is why it is important to get your feedback, and also her feedback (the daughter).

First, let's start with a couple of questions:
How have you known this museum? Why have you chosen to come to visit it?
I have an annual membership and I have been going here since its opening. And so has she (the daughter).
How many times did your daughter go there before?
I think 7 to 10 times.
Have you finished your visit? How long did you stay in the museum?
We had to give food to the children.
From a range from 1 to 6, how would you evaluate your experience?
About  4, because of the people. Usually we come here when it is less crowded.
Can you give me three good/bad things about your visit of the museum?
Fantastic exhibition space, beautiful outlook, lots of space.
Too high prices at the restaurant, the lockers were broken (to store luggage), and the kids got bored.
Will you come again?
I will come again (meaning without the children).

Let's talk now about the children's experience. Were they happy to come here?
Let's ask her.
Were you happy when he (the father) told you that you were going to the museum?
(the daughter, to his father) You didn't tell me, daddy! You said, we were going to meet them (some friends of the family) and eat some lunch!
[...]
How much did you enjoy your visit here? Very much, not at all?
Kind of.
Do you think you we concentrated or that you had trouble to focus on the pictures?
It's a bit boring!
Why did you think it was boring?
I don't know, just walking isn't interesting.
To the father: any idea on how her experience might be improved?
Hm, no. Next time I won't take her.
Any suggestion about something that could have rendered your visit more interesting?
The father talking: we used to take our photos at a booth. That was fun. The booth is gone now.
* Note: the booth was a device where you could take photos of you (1 or + people) and have it printed with the Fotografiska label) *
The father to the daughter: what if you had your iPad?
[...] The adults have the phones, and the kids have the iPads.

[thanks, and further unrecorded discussions]

Alex
