Mathilda wakes up on a Sunday morning. She feels a bit
groggy after a good night’s sleep. At first she just lies staring at the ceiling,
collecting her thoughts. As the memory from last night’s surprise news slowly
comes back to her she is filled with a happy jitter. Her parents had told her
they were going on a visit to
Fotografiska where they would meet up with her best friend Sandra and her
parents. Mathilda quickly reaches for her phone to check if Sandra is awake but
is surprised by the realization that Sandra had beaten her to it. The text says
“So excited for the trip today! See you guys soon! <3”. She sends a quick
reply as she gets dressed and then rushes down the stairs.
Her parents are already awake and have set the table.
“Pancakes for breakfast! Are you kidding me?” she says as she excitedly dances
down the last few steps. The family enjoys the calm Sunday breakfast drifting
in and out of pleasant conversation. Mathilda makes sure to maintain the steady
stream of texts that is flowing between her and Sandra. Her parents doesn’t
mind. Not today.
When they arrive at the museum Sandra and her family is
already there waiting for them. Sandra has already scouted the entrance and
happily announces that there’s an exhibition of animal pictures. Mathilda is
very pleased since she and Sandra both love animals. They even have a club
called SAMAD (Sandra And Mathilda Animal Drawing). They all enter the museum
and are met by the first exhibition that happens to be the one with the
animals. The pictures are amazing. As they move along the different pictures
their parents tell them fun facts about the different animals.
As the families move to the next room Mathilda feels her
excitement drop a bit as she realizes that the walls are filled a grown-up
themed pictures. The pictures seem to depict how people live in different
countries. She shares a look with Sandra who confirms her feelings by rolling
her eyes back. She turn around to ask her parents if she and Sandra can go
ahead on their own and look at the next room but is stopped in her tracks as
she is met by an excited smile from her mom. “In this room we have prepared a
little game for you” her mom explains as she hands out pen and paper to the
kids. “I want you to follow these instructions and if you do really good
there’s a price waiting for you!” Mathilda turns her head to Sandra to see if
she’s as excited as her, but Sandra is already on her way to the first task.
“Wait for me! We’re supposed to do them together!” she shouts as she run after
her friend. The tasks vary from finding information in the room to imagining
and drawing the house of the neighbor to an African family in one of the
pictures. The parents follow them around the room and answer questions about
the pictures and giving hints to how they should solve the problems.
After the challenge they all are feeling a bit hungry and
the families gather around a table in the restaurant. The girls talk about the
things they have seen as they enjoy a meal of Swedish meatballs. “Imagine
having to carry water on you head like that.” Sandra says. Just as Mathilda is
about to answer her friend her dad interrupts her. “Well girls.. it seems like
you have just broken the record in the annual Fotografiska world championships
for kids.” What is he talking about?
Mathilda thinks. Oh the challenge! “The
jury feel like we have no other choice but to grant you the first price: a
stuffed animal each from the giftshop.”
Best. Day. Ever.
